For the past decade discussions about accessibility have been brought to the forefront – ensuring equal access for all. However, in recent years and months with the AI revolution, the conversation has become even stronger – seemingly more important than ever before. Despite our shared best efforts, folks with disabilities are being left behind.
- blind people using screen readers,
- the motor-impaired using only the keyboard to navigate,
- people with epilepsy,
- colour blindness,
- ADHD, cognitive and learning disabilities,
- visual impairments and more.
Compliance and accessibility is a world-wide issue. Given the large volume of content we consume and share online in North America, the challenges are exacerbated. In Canada and abroad, governments have added regulations to various industries to ensure compliance issues are reduced. But its not enough. Business owners we needs to pro-actively take action.
In Ontario, when we talk about compliance and accessibility, we refer to the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act for guidance. This government regulated act outlines the key attributes a physical and/or online presence should have in place to be compliant. If you own a business in Ontario you may want to read it.
Human Centric Approach to Business
But let’s step outside of government regulations and speak to our obligation as humans to treat one another well and respect our mutual differences and commonalities. Not one of us is perfect nor should we want to be – because that can be a bit boring. Let’s lift each other up.
